Seniors Invited to Free Fraud Prevention Event
FRANKFORT, Ky. (April 21, 2008) – Lexington regional area seniors are invited to a FREE workshop to learn how to protect themselves from investment fraud, home improvement fraud, mail fraud, predatory lending and identity theft. Participants will receive free handouts and materials. Complimentary lunch and door prizes will be available for those who register by calling 877-926-8300. AARP research shows that baby boomers and older investors – because they have the money to invest – are natural targets for a wide range of unscrupulous practices. The Senior Scam Jam is designed to raise awareness about some of the techniques con artists use to take our money, so we can recognize the tactics and protect ourselves.

The techniques scam artists use to sell inappropriate investments are typical of many types of fraudulent activities. That’s why Kentucky’s Campaign for Wise and Safe Investing has included partners such as the AARP, Office of Financial Institutions (OFI), Attorney General’s Office, the Better Business Bureau and the United States Postal Inspection Service to provide information on avoiding fraud and protecting yourself and your finances. Before investing, check with OFI, Kentucky’s state securities regulator, to verify if the investment opportunity is registered and if the seller is licensed. Use the online search at www.kfi.ky.gov/search.htm or call 800-223-2579. The Lexington Senior Scam Jam is made possible by a grant from the AARP Foundation. Find out more at: www.kfi.ky.gov/consumerinformation/cwsi.htm. OFI is an agency of the Department of Public Protection in the Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet.
